Businesswoman and philanthropist Agnes Kagure has been praised as the strongest woman in Nairobi, respected and sought after for political associations, courtesy of her commitment to bettering the lives of the less fortunate.
During a convention in Nairobi, Agnes Kagure inspired women with an interest of joining politics not to be intimidated by the gender debate and instead soldier on.
According to Kagure,
“It should be remembered that women had been sidelined for long, but today Kenya is being admired by other African countries. It is without a doubt that our efforts are being seen”
Agnes Kagure has been an inspiration to many and in various other situations. Despite receiving opposition from some politicians who think she is a threat to their seats, Kagure knows how to thrive in the waves and her star has continued to shine.
Many from the Kenyan government started emulating her when she started the Agnes Kagure Foundation (AKFO), where among many philanthropic activities, she enhances the voice of the youth and women in order to be better heard.
Through her foundation, the youth’s ideas are amplified and activated. The foundation also helps the successful transition of students from the classroom to the boardroom.
Also, she has successfully mentored students to further their leadership potential as it has been seen at the Kenya Universities Students Organization (KUSO) where as the Patron, she revamped the organization to draw interest from powerful political players in the country now bidding to be identified with students.
As she often says,
“I steer the foundation to hold the hands of young people and women who live on the margins of society – those who wonder if they can ever get capital and become small business owners; those who often scramble for their next meal, sometimes unsuccessfully. These are the people that the Agnes Kagure Foundation is teaming up with the singular goal of expanding their markets and helping them to produce products that are responsive to those markets”
Despite many guesses and allegations on her political ambitions now that she is firmly on the spotlight, she remains tight-lipped, neither confirming or denying and choosing to better lives of the less advantaged, adding that the future will take care of itself once the present is satisfied.
Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa has blamed the disunity and underdevelopment in Luhyaland squarely on Raila Odinga.
Speaking in Kakamega town on Monday, the politician said that most companies that have long been a source of income for the people of Western Region have collapsed or are in their deathbed because of the region’s support for the opposition leader.
“We are tired of gambling with the lives of our people, we have supported him more than enough without any returns. He promised you that he was taking you to a land of milk and honey only for him to join his foes,” he added.
Echesa remained coy on his support for Deputy President William Ruto saying that his support will only be guaranteed if the DP assures that they (Luhyas) will have a bigger stake in his government.
He also challenged the President to prove to Luhyas that he had their best interests at heart by helping Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi to secure a leadership position.
He said just the same way the President helped Raila and Kalonzo to secure leadership positions in the continent, so should he for Musalia.
“Kisumu and Kakamega are worlds apart in terms of development. Raila has not brought any change for us here. In Kisumu there is an airport, investors flock there.”
“We have supported him all these years to the extent of rejecting our own Mudavadi and that is a mistake we shall not do again,” he added.
Mr Echesa seemed to read from the same script used by the Deputy President when he termed Raila as the Lord of Poverty.
Siaya Senator, James Orengo has denied being paid by Deputy President William Ruto to recuse himself from the Weston Hotel case.
This comes after he, on Monday, October 7, quit representing Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) in a case against the Weston Hotel. Immediately, speculations flared as to the reasons for his recusal from the case.
Questions arose on whether he prevailed upon to quit or he was paid or there was a conflict of interest?
The hotel’s lawyer, Senior Counsel Ahmednassir Abdulahi, made the application to have Orengo thrown out of KCAA’s team, claiming that he was acting on behalf of the Orange Democratic Party (ODM).
Another lawyer representing the authority, Stephen Ligunya informed the High Court that the application seeking to stop Orengo from acting on its behalf was just a sideshow.
During a court hearing when Orengo’s move was announced, Ahmednassir claimed he was disappointed by the fact that the senator opted out.
He further went on to attack the Daily Nation over a story that was titled ‘Bank Fights to Get Ksh1 Billion from Ruto Hotel’, claiming it was intended to litigate what was not before the court.
Ahmednassir had argued that the former Lands minister had to be disqualified over conflict of interest.
In the urgent application filed before the Environmental and Land Court, the city lawyer further claimed that the Siaya senator had no instructions to act on behalf of KCAA.
Ahmednassir alleged that Orengo’s role in the case was just a political matter for ODM to gain capital, with a view to scandalize and vex the hotel and its ownership.
“A leader of the Senate acting or prosecuting cases before the Judiciary is a clear breach of the separation of powers and a threat to the independence of Judiciary and his presence, in this case, violates the code of conduct that regulates the behavior of state officers,” Weston Hotel’s representative added.
In his defense, the Siaya senator responded by stating that he had the right to represent anyone, arguing that Weston Hotel shouldn’t be allowed to determine whom KCAA hires.
He further noted that ODM was not a party in the proceedings, nor to the best of their knowledge, was Weston Hotel a political party or aspirant for the party to have an interest in.
